The credit for creating India's vast tea empire goes to the British, who discovered tea in India and cultivated and consumed it in enormous quantities between the early 1800s and India's independence from Great Britain in 1947. Tea is one of the industries, which by an Act of Parliament comes under the control of the Union Government of India. India is the second largest producer of tea in the world and world largest tea producer of Black tea, India produces about 1200 million-kilograms of which India exports about 250 Mn-Kgs. In the calendar year 2016 Indian tea export value was INR 47316.60 million (Source www.teaboardofindia.gov.in). Today, India is one of the world's largest producers of tea with 13,000 gardens and a workforce of more than 2 million people involved in its production.
